August 4th – Brooklyn, NY -- The Brooklyn Cyclones (25-22) fell to the Williamsport Crosscutters (26-21) by a score of 5-1 in the rubber match of a three-game set. A five-run third inning was all the ‘Cutters needed to defeat the Cyclones. The Brooklyn bullpen gave the offense a chance to win, shutting down the opposition, but the Cyclones stranded six runners and went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Williamsport starter Lino Martinez (5-2, 2.91) picked up the win after tossing 6.0 innings of one-run ball.

Starter Eduardo Aldama (2-3, 4.50) was saddled with the loss after allowing five earned runs in 6.0 innings, all of which came in the third. Aside from that inning, the righthander pitched very effectively, allowing one hit and one walk in his other 5.0 innings of work.

The five runs scored in the third inning were pushed across with five consecutive hits. After a double and a single gave the Crosscutters runners on the corners with one out, Luis Unda drove in the first run of the game on a hard-hit grounder that was out of the reach of the outstretched first baseman Richard Lucas. Williamsport kept the chain moving with a triple over the head of right fielder Charley Thuber to clear the bases and give them a 3-0 lead. The fifth hit and run came on a two-run home run by Aarron Altherr – his second round-tripper in two days. Aldama settled down after the homer, however, inducing a fly out and ground out to end the frame.

Chase Greene, who scored yesterday’s winning-run, picked up Brooklyn’s first hit of the game in the bottom of the third, but the team did not score a run until the fifth inning.

With two outs and the bases empty, Thurber doubled on a fly ball that one-hopped the left field wall. He then came around to score on a single by Xorge Carrillo. The base hit ended a 0-for-8 skid for the former Arizona State Sun Devil.

Although the Cyclones’ pen blanked the ‘Cutters over 3.0 innings, the offense could not muster another run. This was the fourteenth time the pen has not allowed a run and just the third time the team has lost when the relievers shut down the opposition.

The Cyclones will cross the Verrazano Bridge tomorrow, Friday, August 5, to take on the Staten Island Yankees at 7 p.m. LHP Carlos Vazquez (2-2, 3.38) will oppose RHP Wilton Rodriguez (1-3, 3.93). The four-game series against the Baby Bombers will be split between MCU Park and Richmond County Ballpark. Saturday and Monday’s games will be at MCU and Sunday’s game will be in Staten Island. In their return home on Saturday, August 6, the Cyclones will begin play at 6 p.m. There will post-game fireworks. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 718-507-TIXX, visiting the MCU Park box office, or logging onto BrooklynCyclones.com.
