BROOKLYN BATS BLAZING IN 11-1 WIN OVER 'BIRDS

July 22nd -- Brooklyn, NY -- The Brooklyn Cyclones (19-15) defeated the Aberdeen IronBirds (10-25) by a score of 11-1 on a hot, humid Friday night at MCU Park. The weather wasn’t the only thing that was hot in Coney Island as the blazing Brooklyn bats outscored Aberdeen, 24-1, in the two game set at MCU Park. The piping-hot pitching staff was back at it again tonight as well, holding Aberdeen to just five hits for the second night in a row. The Cyclones have now defeated the IronBirds in all five of their games at MCU Park this season. Reliever Todd Weldon (3-0) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, picking up the win after starter Randy Fontanez scattered two hits and three strikeouts in 4.0 shutout innings.

With two outs in the top of the third, Aberdeen put the first runner in scoring position of the game, but a diving catch on a bloop pop fly to right field by Charley Thurber erased the threat.

Richard Lucas’ RBI-single in the top of fourth ignited a two-out, four-run rally. The single plated Danny Muno, who was nearly left stranded after leading off the inning with a double. After Lucas advanced to second on a wild pitch, Thurber brought the Jacksonville native around to score on the second double of the inning. Unsatisfied with the 2-0 lead, Brian Harrison launched his first home run of the season well over the left field wall. The hot-hitting Harrison, who extended his hitting streak to six games on the homer, was only cooled down by the post-game Gatorade bath.

The Cyclones one-upped their four-run effort with a five-run fifth inning – four of which came before an out was recorded. Brooklyn strung together three consecutive singles to begin the inning, the third of which brought in two runs and caused Aberdeen to pull their starting pitcher. His replacement did not fare any betteras he walked his first batter and then served up an RBI-double to Javier Rodriguez. The two-bagger was his 12th of the season, which ties the NYPL-lead. The IronBirds reliever then uncorked a wild pitch to allow Brooklyn’s eighth run to score and move J-Rod over to third. After a fielding error by the third baseman kept the no-out rally alive, Thurber picked up his second RBI of the game on a groundout to give the Cyclones an 8-0 lead. With the no-out rally over, Aberdeen induced a double-play to end the inning.

Aberdeen got on the board in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch, but Brooklyn answered right back in the bottom of the frame with J-Rod’s RBI-groundout. Muno, who scored on the play, reached base on his second of the double of the game.

Brooklyn added another run in the eighth on an RBI-single by Ismael Tijerina.

Tyson Seng, who worked the seventh and eighth innings, tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season.

Brooklyn begins a three-game series at State College tomorrow, Saturday, July 23, at 7 p.m. RHP Marco Camarena (1-3) will oppose RHP Ryan Hafner (0-2). After an off-day on Tuesday, the Cyclones return home to MCU Park for a three-game series vs. Connecticut. The first game begins on Wednesday, July 27, at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available and be purchased by calling 718-507-TIXX, visiting the MCU Park box office, or logging onto BrooklynCyclones.com.
