July 20th – Aberdeen, MD – For the second night in a row, the Aberdeen IronBirds jumped out to an early lead, but this time the Cyclones were unable to climb all the way back, falling by the score of 6-5 in ten innings on Wednesday night. Richard Lucas tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the ninth, but Aberdeen rallied in the extra innings to win the game. Brandon Brown paced Brooklyn’s offense, going 2-5 including his fifth home run of the season.
The IronBirds wasted little time getting on the scoreboard on Wednesday. Glynn Davis led off the bottom of the first with a double and then stole third before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Sammie Starr to make the score 1-0. Aberdeen expanded on their lead with a pair of runs in the second and third to push their advantage to 5-0 after three.
Brooklyn started to claw their way back into the game in the top of the fourth, getting on the scoreboard with a pair of runs. Richard Lucas reached on an error before Brian Harrison singled to put a pair of runners on with nobody out. Travis Taijeron opened the scoring for the Cyclones with a ground rule double that chased Lucas home, before Amauris Valdez plated Harrison with a sacrifice fly to trim Aberdeen’s lead to 5-2.
The IronBirds expanded on their lead, pushing across a single run in the fourth, to score a run for the fourth consecutive inning. But after a scoreless fifth the Cyclones began to mount their comeback. Brandon Brown began the comeback with a two run blast in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-4. In the eighth inning Valdez plated Richard Lucas with his second RBI of the game to slice even further into the lead at 6-5. Brooklyn pulled even in the top of the ninth with Lucas once again at the center of the offensive outburst, plating Ismael Tijerina with a one-out single in the ninth. The Cyclones got the go-ahead run to third base later in the inning, but Travis Taijeron grounded out to end the threat.
The score remained 6-6 until the bottom of the 10th when Wynston Sawyer’s RBI single scored Sammier Starr with the game-winning run to give the IronBirds a 7-6 win in extra frames.
Casey Hauptman (0-2) suffered the loss but the Cyclones bullpen as a whole was impressive this evening as Orlando Tovar, Cory Mazzoni, TJ Chism, Jeremy Gould, and Hunter Carnevale allowed only one run in in 6.2 innings in relief of Brooklyn starter Carlos Vazquez who allowed five runs on seven hits in only 2.1 innings.
