PITCHING YIELDS JUST TWO RUNS, BUT CLONES LOSE, 2-1

July 10th -- Norwich, CT -- The Brooklyn Cyclones (12-11) were topped by the Connecticut Tigers (9-12) by a score of 2-1 on a Sunday afternoon at Senator Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium. The Brooklyn pitching staff held the Tigers to two runs for the second consecutive game, but the offense was unable to plate more than a run off of its seven hits. Cyclones Starter Jeff Walters (1-2, 3.04) was tagged with the loss after allowing just two runs in 5.0 innings of work. Walters has not yielded more than two earned runs in any of his five starts this season. Javier Rodriguez went 2-for-4, which gave him his fourth multi-hit performance in his last five games. Connecticut starter Luis Angel Sanz (2-2) tossed 5.0 scoreless innings en route to picking up the win.

The Tigers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second and doubled their lead in the following inning. Connecticut used a walk and two singles to score in the bottom of the second, but needed just a solo home run in the third inning from their 2011 fourth round pick, Jason King, to extend their lead to two runs.

With the Cyclones behind 2-0, Walters settled down and tossed scoreless fourth and fifth innings. The righthander needed just six batters to record the six outs needed. This start marks the third time Walters has worked 5.0 innings or more this season.

Lefthander Orlando Tovar worked a scoreless sixth inning to prevent a further deficit.

After being blanked for six innings, the Cyclones scored a run in the top of the seventh. Brian Harrison put Brooklyn on the board by plating Danny Muno from third base on an infield single. Muno drew a walk to leadoff the inning, advanced to second on a groundout, and moved to third on a single by Rodriguez.

Trailing 2-1 with one out in the top of the eighth, Amauris Valdez singled to erase an 0-for-18 hitless skid. However, Connecticut induced a groundball double play to end the inning without damage.

The Cyclones bullpen worked a third scoreless inning in the bottom of the eighth to maintain the 2-1 score. Casey Hauptman gave way to Hunter Carnavale for the final out of the inning, but not before shutting out the Tigers over 1.2 innings of relief.

Muno singled to lead off the top of the ninth, but was caught attempting to steal second. After a strikeout and a groundout, Connecticut secured the victory.
